Ras El Hanout
An exotic blend of spices, Ras el hanout is the Moroccan version of a complex Indian curry or Mexican mole. Each blend is different, but common ingredients are turmeric, anise, ginger and cinnamon. Ras el hanout is Arabic for “head of the shop”, signifying this as the spice shop owner’s choice blend. Some variations have upwards of 20 different spices!
We’ve featured this delicious spice in this Winter Vegetable Tagine. Tagine is a North African stew named after the earthenware pot in which it was traditionally cooked. A vegetarian dish made with hearty root vegetables, this stew is perfect for a chilly winter night!
