Whiskey Wednesday: The Old Fashioned
It’s no secret that Old Fashioneds have made a new comeback in a big way. Since this cocktail classic has eluded our drink menu for a while, we sat down with the folks at Skytown – Bushwick’s neighborhood bar that has perfected the art of “simple but excellent” – to snag their recipe.
Queue in on the bar’s “slower-than-the-rest-of-New-York” vibe and make this drink tonight (Mason Jar serving glass mandatory):
Skytown’s Simple Man (Old Fashioned)
- demerera sugar cubes
- angostura bitters
- seltzer water
- sliced orange
In an 8oz ball mason jar, combine 1 Demerara sugar cube, 4 dashes Angostura Bitters, a splash of seltzer, and a quarter-inch orange slice.
Using a muddler (Don’t have one? Try using a wooden spoon handle!), muddle together the above ingredients, to crush and combine.
Top muddled ingredients with ice cubes and a healthy pour (2 ounces is standard) of your favorite whiskey.
Pssst… Already perfected this bartender’s staple? Try it with a Blood Orange twist with this recipe from Culinary Colleen!
