6 Unexpected DIY Beauty Hacks to Create in Your Kitchen
You’ve probably heard it said that beauty isn’t just skin-deep—but let’s be honest, there is something alluring about a healthy glow that reflects a life well-led and well-fed. Natural foods are a great way to fuel your body, but did you know that some of these same foods do double-duty inside and out?
Here are a handful of DIY beauty hacks that will help you buff your natural glow, using basic items you probably already have in your kitchen:
1. Yogurt face mask
This DIY mask is inexpensive and super simple to put together. All you need is plain, natural yogurt (organic is good if you can get it) and dried oats. Combine equal parts yogurt and oats and mix well. Apply a thick coat to your freshly washed face (make sure your hands are clean!) and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Pro tip: Make sure not to make any sudden movements—those oats don’t always want to stay put. After 15 minutes have passed, simply rinse off the mixture with warm water using either your hands or a washcloth. Moisturize as usual and start collecting compliments about your radiant skin!
2. Olive oil hair mask
This solution to your dry hair woes is as simple as it is effective. A few daily drops of oil applied to the ends of your tresses is great moisture maintenance—just make sure to use the oil sparingly, because one or two drops too many can quickly make your hair look, well, oily. (This also isn’t the end of the world—you can just tie your hair back and revel in the fact that you’re moisturizing while you go about your day #winning.)
For a more intense moisture treatment, saturate all of your hair—or at least all of the shaft—with olive oil and let it sit for as little as an hour or as long as overnight. If you do decide to opt for an overnight treatment, make sure to cover your hair with a shower cap to protect your pillow. You can also use a hair dryer before covering, as the heat helps the oil absorb. The next morning, shampoo and condition as you usually would, but make sure to shampoo very thoroughly (a second sudsing may be in order). And voila. Your hair will be noticeably shinier and softer than it was the day before.
3. Coconut oil eye makeup remover
Ah, coconut oil. What can’t you do? This sweetly scented oil is good for so much more than cooking (but it is great for that). It’s incredibly hydrating for dry skin and hair—you can even use it to shave your legs! This wonder oil is also a great makeup remover that’s less harsh than those you might find in your drugstore. Just saturate a cotton ball with natural coconut oil (again, organic is good if you can get it), apply to made-up eyes and watch even the most waterproof of mascaras melt away.
4. Sea salt scrub
You’ve probably heard about the mythical power of sea salt—salt from the Dead Sea is said to cure all kinds of ailments, from rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis to acne and poor circulation. Whether or not those claims hold true, sea salt does deliver a more basic benefit: it’s a fantastic natural exfoliant (and its often the main ingredient in many a store-bought scrub). Instead of looking to the beauty aisle for your next scrub, you can easily whip one up at home that’s just as effective—plus it’s nice to know exactly what you’re putting on your skin. All you need is coarse sea salt and either coconut or olive oil. Apart from those elements, you can add essential oils to your liking—lavender oil is wonderfully fragrant and peppermint oil delivers a tingly, refreshing effect.
Simply combine 1 cup coarse sea salt, 1/2 cup oil, and 5 drops essential oil (you can add more if you like a stronger scent) and stir. This is just the base ratio, so you can make more or less of the mixture to suit your exfoliating ambitions. Use in the shower after cleansing skin and simply rinse. After the sea salt washes away, some oil will remain, which is a good thing! Just pat your skin dry and skip the lotion—you’ll be well moisturized for the day.
5. Lemon deodorant
Whether or not natural deodorant is your thing, it can be nice to take a break from aluminum-based, often chemical-ridden antiperspirants once in a while. This DIY deodorant is incredibly easy to acquire and apply—and it’s chemical-free! All you need is a lemon (seriously). Just cut a lemon in quarters and rub a slice onto your armpits. If you prefer a spray application, you can also squeeze lemon juice into a spray bottle. Just make sure to wait before applying to freshly shaved pits, because ouch.
6. Apple cider vinegar hair rinse
ACV is everywhere these days, lauded for its myriad health benefits. This fermented apple elixir is said to help balance pH and alkalinity in the body when taken orally—but it’s also a great natural way to restore shine to dull hair. All you need is unfiltered (or raw) apple cider vinegar and water—but you can add essential oils if desired: lavender for fragrance or tea tree for oily hair. Combine about 3 tablespoons of raw ACV with 16 ounces of water and a couple drops of essential oil if that appeals to you. After shampooing, pour the mixture over your hair, starting at the scalp, and let it sit in your hair for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and repeat once a week.
